Historical Railway Atlas of Germany

Updated 15 May 2007

Welcome to the English web site of the Historical Railway Atlas of Germany. Once finished the atlas will contain a set of maps in the scale of 1:200,000 that show all railways that have ever operated on the area of present-day Germany. The scale will allow to show much detail. Where there is too much railway per square kilometer maps in larger scale will provide that detail instead.
Excerpt from the atlas The atlas is intended for print, i.e., it consists of individual pages with all the necessary side decorations. The final edition will have well into three hundred pages but it will be quite some time until then.

You nonetheless can download the current draft. It is available either as all pages in one file or as the individual pages in separate files. You may also download the source files and build your own atlas.

The atlas is an open source/open content project. This basically means two things. First, you can do with it whatever you want as long as the result remains under the same licenses. Second, and more important, the atlas is the collaborative work of many. If you find a mistake, can provide additional information, or have anything else to say, send it in. The current e-mail address is atlas@nvnc.de.

Further information regards the atlas and the historical data:

Please note ...

... that the non-geographic data is collected in a sibling project named 'Historical Data on the German Railway Infrastructure'. Most prominently, the line numbers given in the maps refer to this project.
